CONSTANT CONFLICT 2011

The artist exists in a state of Constant Conflict between Visible, Invisible; Addition, Subtraction;
Creativity, Discipline; Proximity, Distance; Determinate and Indeterminate.
Exploring this fragile balance; instinctive, temporal transitions are distilled through memory and imagination, creating a mood of contemplation.
Killen draws from many sources and is influenced by the writings of Barthes, Kundera, Murakami and the works of, amongst others, Casper David Friedrich, Luc Tuymans, Raoul de Keyser, Jasper Johns.
The ‘space beyond’ of the Northern Romantics, is momentarily revealed, while whispers and shadows remain in silence.

Oil on canvas 60x60x1.5cm
Influenced by artists such as Casper David Friedrich, Arshille Gorky, Prunella Clough, Brice Marden and reading selected works of Barthes, Kundera, Murakami while grappling with Heidegger and Bergsonism,
The artist explores the ‘here and now’ and ‘beyond’ of the Romantic Tradition and seeks to discover our primitive connections.
Process plays an important role in investigating the idea of how we recall moments and experiences within the realm of time and space.
Paint is applied, removed and re-applied in a continuous search for essence and clarity. The painted abstract elements; thoughts and ideas, both seen and unseen, imagined or partly remembered, are exposed and revealed seemingly from the depth of the canvas itself. Striations of paint which remain allude to ancient rock formations found in nature.
Working in oils, the artist seeks to create a vista into a world of new horizons and old ceremonies that exists quietly, seeping slowly into ones’ senses.
